De Beers Investigates Greenland's Ocean Diamond Potential

According to an environmental assessment report by De Beers, it commissioned the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) to investigate "known existing" diamond deposits off the west coast of the Arctic. The report shows that De Beers Marine (DBM) wants to determine whether the offshore environment is conducive to the formation of secondary diamond deposits, and therefore requires high-resolution geophysical data.

Ocean diamonds are usually of high quality, because only the best diamonds can withstand the erosion of the sea. De Beers currently mines marine diamonds off the coast of Namibia; and according to the Kimberley Process (KP) data, the average carat unit price of rough diamonds produced in Namibia in 2020 is as high as US$465 per carat, one of the highest levels in the world.
