The Old Legend about Ruby

In ancient times, there were many legends and strange religious beliefs surrounding ruby. According to one of these legends, the wearer of a ruby would live a long and healthy life, become wealthy, wise and happy in love. Moreover, if someone wore a ruby ring on the left hand or a ruby corsage on the left side, he would have the magic power to turn bad luck into good fortune and turn enemies into friends. The ancient Romans referred to rubies collectively as carbunculus. Pliny said that gemologists were very good at imitating rubies, and they placed thin sheets of metal under them to cause a good fire of brilliance. He also written that “According to legend, the Ethiopians dipped their dark and black red pomegranates in vinegar, and after 14 days, they became pure and lovely and remained so for 14 months.”

The Bible also told us that the ruby symbolized the Jewish tribes. The fourth jewel on Aaron’s vestments is either a garnet or a ruby. On this jewel was engraved the name of Judah. This was precious stone that had been the crown’s pet since the Judahites proclaimed the establishment of the throne of Israel.

For many centuries, Indians believed that colorless sapphires were undeveloped. Burmese gem miners believed that dull-colored ruby would eventually turn bright red if buried underground. They believed that ruby was the most developed members of the corundum family. The Burmese cherished ruby not only because of their beauty, but also because they believe it could bless a person from harm, for which a small cut must be made in the person’s body and the gemstone embedded. Legend has it that a warrior who voluntarily performed this procedure would become invulnerable to swords and spears.
